Online 6-Week Classes

Creative Kids ($20) K-1st | Mondays 10:00 am-11:00 am, taught by Shelly V.

In this 6-week course, we will sample all sorts of art forms— from music to visual arts to poetry! We'll rely on online videos, books, and other sources to learn about various creative endeavors, and students will create drawings each week as they reflect on what they have learned.

No previous experience or artistic skill level is required, and the class will not involve handwriting.

Materials needed:

In each class, students will need blank paper and something to color with (crayons or markers are fine— whatever they prefer!) For some classes, students will need to print something ahead of time. Please let Shelly know if you do not have access to a printer so she can get you what you need!

Introduction to Poetry Writing ($20) 7th-12th | Mondays 11:15 am -12:15 pm, taught by Amy R.

"Without poetry, we lose our way." -Joy Harjo

This course will be mostly generative poetry writing with an overview of concepts and structures to provide direction in practicing using various poetic themes and forms in your own poems. We will begin with using the senses, move through the parts of poetry, wordplay, rhyme schemes, poetry of place, and end with a workshop during the final class.

Book Club: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl ($20) 2nd-4th | Mondays 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm, taught by Amanda C.

In this course, we will read and discuss the novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Students will read chapters each week before class and discuss over Zoom and Google Classroom. There will be weekly at-home enrichment activities connected to the novel. Zoom classes will include lots of discussion, as well as clips from the two films based on the book. Each registered family will need a copy of the novel for the duration of the course.

The class will conclude with an optional planned field trip to see the Lexington Children's Theatre production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in late March.

Greek Mythology and the Pegasus Exam Section A ($25) 3rd-4th | Mondays 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm, taught by Celia T.

Heroes! Monsters! Peril-filled journeys! Gods and Goddesses! This class for 3rd and 4th graders will focus on general Greek and Roman mythology, including the Greek and Roman names of gods and goddesses. We'll use books, videos, games, and discussions to add to our knowledge of the subject. This class will prepare students to take the National Mythology Exam, and registration for the exam is included in the cost of the class. Students will take the exam independently sometime between March 6-10, 2023, and the teacher will submit answer sheets for scoring. Taking and submitting the exam is optional, but all students will receive a copy of the exam, so they can look at it and test their knowledge independently if desired.

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Mythology is required reading, and all students should have access to a copy. (Available at the library, used, on Audible, in many bookstores, or on Amazon for $17.) Additional reading is encouraged but not required. Homework will be assigned, but it should be interesting and not painful.

Greek Mythology and the Pegasus Exam Section B ($25) 5th-8th | Mondays 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm, taught by Celia T.

Heroes! Monsters! Peril-filled journeys! Gods and Goddesses! This class for 5th-8th graders will focus on general Greek and Roman mythology, as well as Jason and the Argonauts, the Hero's Journey in Literature, and how the Hero's Journey relates to some of these myths.

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Mythology and Hera: The Goddess and Her Glory from the Olympians Series by George O'Connor are required reading, and all students should have access to both books. (Available at the library, used, on Audible, in many bookstores, or on Amazon for $17.) All students will be given a digital copy of the chapter about Jason and the Golden Fleece from H.A. Guerber's The Myths of Greece and Rome. Additional reading is encouraged but not required. Homework will be assigned, but it should be interesting and not painful.

Fairy Tale Mix-Up ($20) 5th-6th | Mondays 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm, taught by Melissa R.

What if Rapunzel's hair was made of spaghetti? Or if Snow White was the villain? What if Jack's beanstalk took him to the center of the earth? Or if Little Red Riding Hood knew karate?

Join us on a whimsical journey through the world of fairy tales! In this class, we will create a mixed-up land for exploration. We will look at the structure and elements found within traditional fairy tales, analyze their meaning and purpose, and then use our imagination to create something entirely new from these story building blocks.

Students should come to class with a way to write- a pencil and paper, typing or using voice-to-text in a word processor, and an adult to serve as a scribe are all possibilities. This class will have some outside reading, and the teacher will provide optional enrichment activities in the Google Classroom.
