Online 6-Week Classes

Fun in the Kitchen: Cooking 101 ($20) K-2nd | Mondays 10:00 am-11:00 am, taught by Amanda C.

In this class, we will explore flavors and textures of food as we prepare a new recipe every week.  We'll meet virtually in our kitchens and work together to learn simple, kid-friendly dishes to share with our families.  Target skills include kitchen safety, measuring, and following a recipe. Grown-ups, please plan to be nearby in case we need help.

The Hero’s Journey ($20) 3rd-5th | Mondays 11:15 am -12:15 pm, taught by Melissa R.

Consider this your call to adventure! In this class, we will leave the ordinary world behind to explore the timeless concept of the hero's journey. From mythical realms to everyday adventures, students will uncover the universal elements that make heroes and their quests so compelling. Students will flex their literary analysis skills as we explore stories like Spider-Man, Alice in Wonderland, The Lion King, and many more. We will also write our own epic tales through creative writing exercises that build off what we learn in class. This class pairs well with BHLC's Greek Mythology and the Pegasus Exam class.

The Joy of Spreadsheets! ($20) 8th-12th | Mondays 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm, taught by Craig R.

This class is an introduction to the wide and wonderful world of spreadsheets! We will explore many of the most common and important uses for spreadsheets, including: data tables, calculations, aggregations, formatting, charts, and more. We will use lots of examples to show how spreadsheets can be used as a practical tool for school and personal projects.

No prior experience with spreadsheets is required. We will use Google Sheets, which is available with a free Google account. This class requires access to a computer with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad (i.e., a mobile device with only a touch screen will not suffice), both during class and for after-class homework.

Greek Mythology and the Pegasus Exam Section A ($25) 3rd-4th | Mondays 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm, taught by Celia T.

Heroes! Monsters! Peril-filled journeys! Gods and Goddesses! This class for 3rd and 4th graders will focus on general Greek and Roman mythology, including the Greek and Roman names of gods and goddesses. We'll use books, videos, games, and discussions to add to our knowledge of the subject. This class will prepare students to take the National Mythology Exam, and registration for the exam is included in the cost of the class. Students will take the exam independently sometime between March 5-8, 2024. Students will have a choice of an online or paper exam. If taken on paper, the teacher will submit answer sheets for scoring. Taking and submitting the exam is optional, but all students will receive a copy of the exam, so they can look at it and test their knowledge independently if desired.

D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Mythology is required reading, and all students should have access to a copy. (Available at the library, used, on Audible, in many bookstores, or on Amazon.) Additional reading is encouraged but not required. Homework will be assigned, but it should be interesting and not painful. Please see the link below for a Bibliography and more information about the exam:

We'll use books, videos, games, and discussions to add to our knowledge of the subject. Explain and Train Your Brain ($20) 6th-7th | Mondays 4:15 pm - 5:15 pm, taught by Hannah H.

Do you ever wonder why we often struggle to do the tasks we know we need to do – sometimes even activities we really want to do? What determines our behavior and our preferences? What drives our strengths and our weaknesses? And is there anything we can do if we want to change things up a bit?

In this class we will delve into what science can tell us about how our brains work, explore different models of personality and motivation, and then road test a variety of approaches and techniques for dealing with mental obstacles and achieving our goals.
